Semrush Alternatives Compared: Real Prices for 2026

Disclosure: budgetSEO is our product. It is not affiliated with Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Moz, Mangools, Surfer, Screaming Frog, Ubersuggest or Semrush. It tracks rankings and researches keywords. It does not replace Semrush.
People search for Semrush alternatives because the bill is high, extra seats cost more as a team grows, and most of the suite sits unused. This guide compares the tools that come up in that search, with prices dated below, and says when Semrush is still the right buy.
Why people switch from Semrush
Price is the usual trigger. A comparison page retrieved 23 Oct 2026 listed Semrush Pro at $117.33/mo when billed annually. A freelancer who only checks rankings and looks up keywords often cannot justify that. Moving up a tier, or paying for more people, raises the total again. The month-to-month price for that Pro plan was not in the sources checked here, so it is not published.
The second reason is unused features. Plenty of people open Semrush for rankings and keyword ideas, then never touch PPC research, the Content Marketing Platform or the social tools. Paying for a wide suite to use two of its tools is a hard cost to defend.
The third reason is the learning curve. Semrush is built for agencies running many client campaigns. A solo blogger with one site gets a dense dashboard. A narrower tool that does one job is easier to learn.
Stay if you run paid search, need a content workflow, or send client reports from one login. Leave if you only need rank tracking, keyword research and a short backlink summary.
A separate comparison, also retrieved 23 Oct 2026, listed Semrush's own AI visibility Starter at $199/month, or $99/month per domain as a standalone toolkit. That is not the Pro price above. If the reason you are looking around is AI Overview tracking, a smaller tool can cover that without the suite.
How we picked these alternatives
Five checks matter for a small team or a solo operator:
- Price per month, and what another person costs. Annual billing is usually the discounted rate. Where a source gave only that rate, the month-to-month price is marked not published. We did not turn an annual figure into a monthly one, or the reverse.
- Keyword, link and rank depth. How many keywords you can track, how fresh the ranks are, and whether the link index is deep enough for your niche.
- A free tier or a trial. Can you try the tool before a card is charged?
- Where the data comes from. Our rank checks use live Google results via DataForSEO, so the position is the organic result in the top 100. Other tools may use a cached or sampled index, and those can disagree.
- Whether a beginner can use it. Some screens assume you already know Domain Rating. Others explain themselves.
No single product copies Semrush's whole suite. You may need two tools, one for tracking and one for audits. Specialist tools stay on this list when they are the better choice for one job.
Free and budget options to start with
Start with Google Search Console and Google Keyword Planner. Both are free, both use Google's own data, and both need only a Google account. Search Console shows the queries that already bring clicks. Keyword Planner estimates volume for keywords you want to try. Neither tracks daily rank changes, and neither watches a competitor's positions.
budgetSEO's Free plan is $0. It tracks 15 keywords in 1 project, with manual rank checks and no credit card. For a site under that cap, it covers basic rank tracking and keyword research.
Ubersuggest is the other budget name in this search. It is a keyword tool with light rank checks, aimed at people who do not want a suite. A comparison page retrieved 23 Oct 2026 listed an Individual plan at $29/month and said Ubersuggest has no API on any tier. That $29 is from the comparison page, not a price we confirmed on Ubersuggest's own site. On that same listing, cheaper tiers update monthly or every two weeks, not daily. Confirm the live price before you pay.
Semrush's own free-plan limits were not in the sources checked here, so they are not published. The same is true of free-tier caps for the other paid vendors below. For options that cost nothing, see free sites like Semrush.
The tradeoff: free tools are slow (Search Console often lags two or three days) and they cap how much you can look up. They are for testing an idea, not for day-to-day competitive tracking.
SE Ranking: the cheaper all-in-one
SE Ranking is the suite to look at when you want keyword ideas, a site crawl, position checks, link reports and client-ready reports on one bill, and you want that bill under Semrush Pro. A comparison retrieved 23 Oct 2026 listed it at $103.20/mo when billed annually. Month-to-month billing was not in that source, so it is not published here.
The screens are simpler than Semrush, which helps when a junior teammate or a client has to log in. It fits an SEO-focused team that needs audits, content planning, competitor tracking and rank monitoring, and does not need Semrush's PPC research or Content Marketing Platform.
The tradeoff is the link index. It is smaller than Ahrefs, so prospecting that depends on a deep competitor backlink profile hits a wall sooner.
Ahrefs: best for backlink data
Ahrefs is the strongest option on this list for links. The crawler indexes backlinks at scale. Reach for it when you are prospecting links, reviewing a competitor's link profile, or checking links gained and lost. Its keyword explorer shows search volume and keyword difficulty. Semrush still offers more keyword variations and more detail on SERP features.
Two prices, for two ways of paying:
- Billed monthly: Ahrefs Lite is $129/mo. That is the published monthly comparison price as of October 2026.
- Billed annually: a comparison retrieved 23 Oct 2026 listed Ahrefs at $108/mo. Do not treat $108 as the month-to-month rate.
The interface assumes you already know Domain Rating and URL Rating.
| Feature | Ahrefs | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Backlink index | Yes | Yes |
| Keyword research | Strong volume data | More keyword variations |
| Site audit | Yes | Yes |
| PPC research | No | Yes |
The tradeoff: if you rarely build links, you are paying for a crawler you will not use. This site is not affiliated with Ahrefs.
budgetSEO: keyword and rank tracking on a small budget
This is a rank tracking and keyword research tool for indie hackers, freelancers and small site owners who want Google positions without paying for features they will not open.
Plans:
- Free: $0. 15 keywords, 1 project, manual rank checks, no credit card.
- Starter: $9/mo or $90/yr. 150 keywords, 3 projects, automatic weekly checks.
- Pro: $39/mo or $390/yr. 750 keywords, 10 projects, daily checks on up to 100 keywords.
Paid plans email a digest when rankings move a lot. Pro rechecks up to 100 ranking keywords every day, on top of the weekly update.
Rank data is the exact organic Google position in the top 100, for the country, language and device you choose, from live results via DataForSEO. The keyword explorer shows search volume, keyword difficulty, CPC and a 12-month trend. The AI keyword research agent proposes keywords the site can realistically win, using DataForSEO metrics and how strong the site already is. Domain overview covers another site's organic keywords, estimated traffic, where those keywords sit, the top keywords and a backlink summary. You can track up to 5 competitors per project, with competitor keyword alerts on Pro. AI visibility covers Google AI Overview presence and citations on tracked keywords, ChatGPT mention counts, and saved ChatGPT and Gemini prompts on Pro.
What it does not do: no site audit or crawler, no content editor, no PPC research, no social tools, no link building. If you depend on technical audits, content scores or advertising data, pair it with another tool or pick a full suite.
The tradeoff is scope. It tells you where you rank and which keywords you can win. It will not replace Semrush or SE Ranking for a team that needs audits, a content workflow or PPC research.
Mangools, Moz Pro, Surfer and Screaming Frog
Mangools is five tools: KWFinder for keywords, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher for rank tracking, LinkMiner for backlinks and SiteProfiler for domain overviews. It suits a beginner who wants keyword research and rank tracking behind a simple interface. A comparison page retrieved 23 Oct 2026 listed a starting price of $29.90/month. That page did not say whether $29.90 is the month-to-month rate or the annual rate, so the pricing table leaves month-to-month as not published. This draft also could not verify how many keywords or sites a Mangools plan includes, or whether the trial needs a card. Check those limits on the Mangools site before you buy.
Moz Pro is the pick when the work is local SEO and Domain Authority. Location-based rank tracking shows how a business appears in one city's map results, which is the job when you care about the local pack rather than a national keyword list. Domain Authority is the score many clients already recognize in a proposal, so it helps when you have to explain authority to someone who does not live in an SEO tool. A local team keeps Moz when the work is map-pack visibility and that authority score, not when the work is a national keyword list. This draft could not verify Moz's current price, how many locations a plan tracks, any keyword cap, or whether a trial needs a card. Those figures are not published here.
Surfer SEO is a content optimization tool. It scores on-page factors and suggests terms to include. It does not track rankings, review backlinks or crawl a site, so it sits next to a tracking tool rather than replacing Semrush. Its current price is not published here.
Screaming Frog is a desktop crawler for technical audits: broken links, redirect chains, duplicate content and crawl depth. Run it on a schedule beside your main platform so site health problems show up before a ranking drop does. Its current licence price is not published here.
The tradeoff: each of these does one job well. Most teams run two or three of them rather than dropping Semrush for a single product.
Pricing comparison across alternatives
Every third-party figure below comes from a comparison page retrieved 23 Oct 2026. Our plan prices are the published prices. "Not published" means that billing period was not in the sources, not that the plan is free. An annual rate is not a month-to-month rate.
| Tool | Plan | Billed annually | Billed monthly | Where the figure comes from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Semrush | Pro | $117.33/mo | not published | Comparison page, 23 Oct 2026 |
| Ahrefs | Lite | $108/mo | $129/mo | Annual figure from a comparison page, 23 Oct 2026. Monthly is the published Ahrefs Lite price. |
| SE Ranking | suite | $103.20/mo | not published | Comparison page, 23 Oct 2026 |
| Mangools | entry | $29.90/mo | not published | Comparison page, 23 Oct 2026 |
| Ubersuggest | Individual | not published | $29/mo | Comparison page only, retrieved 23 Oct 2026. Not confirmed on the vendor site. |
| Moz Pro | local SEO | not published | not published | Price and plan limits were not in the sources checked. |
| Surfer SEO | content scores | not published | not published | Price was not in the sources checked. |
| Screaming Frog | crawler licence | not published | not published | Price was not in the sources checked. |
| budgetSEO | Starter | $90/yr | $9/mo | Published plan price. 150 keywords, 3 projects. |
| budgetSEO | Pro | $390/yr | $39/mo | Published plan price. 750 keywords, 10 projects. |
For a site tracking 150 keywords across 3 projects, Starter is $9/mo, or $90/yr. Ahrefs Lite is $129/mo if you pay month to month, or $108/mo on the annual figure from 23 Oct 2026. Semrush Pro was listed at $117.33/mo on annual billing, and its month-to-month rate is not published here. Do not compare that annual Semrush rate with Ahrefs Lite's $129/mo month-to-month price as if they were the same way of paying. Those are list prices, not a quote. Starter does not include audits, a content editor, PPC research or link building.
The Starter and Pro prices are the plan price. A per-seat fee is not part of those published prices. Check each other vendor's seat rules on its own pricing page before you compare a team bill. See the pricing page for the current plan limits.
When to stick with Semrush
Semrush is the better buy when you need PPC research, the Content Marketing Platform or the social suite. An agency running paid search for clients will miss the ad copy and competitive ad data if it leaves. A content team that briefs writers, scores drafts and runs a publishing calendar in Semrush should stay, because the alternatives here focus on keywords and ranks.
Semrush usually wins in these cases:
- An agency runs Google Ads for several clients and wants competitor ad copy next to organic keywords.
- A content team uses Semrush's content templates and writing assistant to brief and score articles.
- A marketing manager reports on SEO, paid search and social from one dashboard.
A cheaper tool is usually enough in these cases:
- A solo blogger tracks about 30 keywords and checks ranks a few times a month.
- A freelancer runs two client sites and needs rank tracking plus a basic audit.
- An indie hacker is researching keywords for a new site and wants a low bill.
Semrush is worth keeping when you use PPC research, the Content Marketing Platform, or one dashboard for SEO, paid search and social. Someone tracking ranks for a handful of sites will usually get more from a focused tool. Paying for the full suite makes sense only if you open several of its toolsets in a normal week.

Frequently asked questions
These frequently asked questions cover free use, whether the data is trustworthy, and which alternatives fit a small site.
Is there a free alternative to Semrush?
Yes, with limits. Google Search Console and Google Keyword Planner are free and cover basic query and keyword work. The Free plan above is $0 and tracks 15 keywords in 1 project, with manual rank checks and no credit card. Ubersuggest is the other budget keyword tool. Its price sits in the table above, taken from a comparison page and not confirmed on the vendor site. No free tool matches Semrush's full suite, and Semrush's own free limits are not published here.
What is the best Semrush alternative for a small budget?
For rank tracking and keyword research, budgetSEO Starter is $9/mo or $90/yr. That covers 150 keywords across 3 projects, with automatic weekly checks. For a broader suite, SE Ranking is the cheaper all-in-one among the paid tools here, listed at $103.20/mo when billed annually as of 23 Oct 2026. Pick the one that closes the gap you actually have. Starter will not audit a site or research ads.
Is Ahrefs a good alternative to Semrush?
When the work is links, yes. Ahrefs Lite is $129/mo billed monthly. A comparison retrieved 23 Oct 2026 also listed $108/mo on annual billing. Ahrefs does not include Semrush's PPC or content tools, so match the feature list to your week. This site is not affiliated with Ahrefs.
Is SE Ranking as good as Semrush?
For many freelancers and small agencies, yes. It covers keyword ideas, site crawls, position checks, link reports and client-ready reports, listed at $103.20/mo on annual billing as of 23 Oct 2026. It does not match Semrush's PPC research or Content Marketing Platform, so it is not a like-for-like swap for a larger team.
Does Ahrefs do keyword research?
Yes. Ahrefs includes keyword research with search volume, keyword difficulty and related keyword ideas. People often choose it for link data. The keyword explorer and AI keyword research above focus on keywords a site can realistically win, rather than on the widest possible keyword list.
Is Semrush's data accurate?
This draft has no sourced study that measures Semrush against Google's own numbers. Treat estimated traffic and keyword difficulty as models unless the vendor says that figure is a measured rank. The rank tracking described above is a different kind of number: organic Google position in the top 100, from live results via DataForSEO, for the country, language and device you choose.
